Chapter 1: The Apron She Should Never Have Worn

My wife made my daughter serve guests at her own graduation party.
She had no idea an admissions officer was standing right behind her with a folder.
I stepped into our backyard and froze.
My daughter Zoria was wearing a stained serving apron.
She was clearing dirty plates off the tables while guests laughed.
This was supposed to be her graduation celebration.
I marched over to my wife, my heart pounding.
"Why is our daughter serving food?" I demanded.
My wife did not even glance up from her glass of wine.
"She lost her college scholarship," she said coldly.
"I was not going to let this party go to waste."
Zoria dropped a tray of glasses.
They shattered on the patio.
"I did not lose it!" Zoria screamed, her voice shaking.
She pointed a trembling finger at my wife.
"You made me decline it so Kendra would not feel bad!"
The backyard went completely silent.
Kendra, her stepsister, looked down at her lap.
My wife had forced our daughter to throw away her entire future just to protect another child's ego.
My hands shook with pure rage.
Before I could say a word, a man in a sharp suit walked out of the house.
He held a thick yellow folder tightly against his chest.
He looked directly at my wife.
"Mrs.
Davis, I am the senior admissions officer from the university," he said calmly.
"And you might want to explain why you forged your stepdaughter's signature on this withdrawal form."
