Chapter 1: The Night Everything Broke Open

My wife sl@pped my five-year-old daughter for touching a piece of bread, so I struck her back.

Seconds later, my stepson revealed a chilling secret about what happens when I leave for work.

My five-year-old daughter, Lily, stood by the table with tears streaming down her face.

My wife, Vanessa, pointed a sharp finger at her.

"You do not take food from my son."

Lily's tiny hand trembled, holding half a dinner roll.

Her little voice whispered, "I was hungry."

Vanessa snatched the roll away.

"I told you that was Mason's."

Mason, her seven-year-old son, glanced at his full plate.

"Mom, she can have mine."

Vanessa snapped instantly.

"Stay out of this."

Lily reached toward the food basket again.

That was when Vanessa sl@pped her across the face.

My little girl stumbled into a chair, clutching her red cheek.

I dropped my heavy work bag on the floor.

"What did you just do?"

Vanessa froze.

"Michael, she was stealing."

"She's five years old."

Lily ran into my arms, her whole body shaking violently.

Then Mason spoke up softly.

"She didn't steal anything."

Vanessa turned with a warning look.

"Mason."

He looked straight at me instead.

"Mom told Lily she wasn't allowed to eat dinner."

My stomach dropped to the floor.

I set Lily behind me and stepped toward Vanessa.

"Did you h*t my child because she was hungry?"

"Michael, don't start."

I sl@pped Vanessa across the face.

She stumbled back against the dining table, staring in total disbelief.

"You h*t me?"

"You put your hands on my child."

Lily tugged on my sleeve, pointing toward the kitchen pantry.

"Daddy, sometimes she locks the food in there so I can't get any."

Vanessa's face went completely pale.

Then Mason whispered, "Dad…

that's not the worst thing she does when you're at work."
