Chapter 2: What the Children Kept Hidden

Part 2 — continued below.

Mason's voice was barely above a whisper, but every word landed like a stone.

"She makes Lily sit in the corner while we eat.

She tells her she's not part of this family."

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"Mason, that is enough."

"She threw Lily's drawing in the trash.

The one she made for your birthday, Dad."

I couldn't speak.

I just looked at Lily, still pressed against my side, her cheek still red.

"Is that true, baby?"

Lily nodded without looking up.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Michael, you don't understand what it's like here all day.

That child is difficult.

She's defiant.

She—"

"She's five."

"She is not my daughter."

The room went cold.

Mason pulled something from his pocket.

A folded piece of paper, crumpled at the edges.

"She was going to throw this away too."

I opened it slowly.

It was a drawing in crayon.

A little girl holding hands with a man.

Underneath, in unsteady letters: *Daddy come home soon.*

My throat closed.

Then Lily whispered, "I hid some of them under my mattress so she couldn't find them."

Vanessa said nothing.

But her eyes moved — just for a second — toward the hallway.

Like she was thinking about something else hidden in that house.

What Michael found next left him unable to breathe.
