Chapter 1: The Table That Divided Them

"Not here.

Eat in the kitchen."

The words fell like ice across the gleaming dining table.

Little Maya froze, holding her plate stacked with turkey and mashed potatoes.

She looked up at her stepmother, her eyes wide with hurt and confusion.

"Why?" Maya's voice trembled, tears immediately welling in her eyes.

"We always eat together."

"This table is for my family tonight," her stepmother replied without a hint of warmth, barely glancing up as she arranged the lavish holiday feast.

Maya swallowed the lump in her throat, bowed her head, and turned to walk alone toward the dark kitchen.

😢

Just as she reached the hallway, the front door swung open.

Maya's father stepped in, tailored suit jacket in hand, tired from his long business trip.

He stopped cold, looking between his daughter carrying a plate away and his wife seated at the head of the table.

"Why isn't she sitting with everyone?" he asked, his voice sharp with immediate concern.

The stepmother put on a soft, tragic smile.

"Oh, darling, it's just a mask of false concern.

She insisted on eating in the kitchen tonight.

I couldn't convince her otherwise."

The father looked at Maya, his expression softening with worry.

"Is that true, sweetheart?"

Before Maya could answer, her older sister, Mia, slammed her fork down and stood up.

"She's lying!" 😤

"Mia, stay out of this!" the stepmother snapped, her calm facade instantly cracking.

"No!

I won't!" Mia pulled out her smartphone and stepped directly between her father and stepmother.

"Dad, I took pictures every single time you went on a work trip.

Look."

She unlocked her phone and handed it to him.

On the screen was a gallery of photos — date and time stamped — showing Maya forced to eat alone in the corner while the stepmother enjoyed grand meals, along with images of Maya crying outside locked doors.

Panicked, the stepmother lunged forward to snatch the phone.

"Give me that!"

The father caught her wrist in mid-air with a grip of steel, his face darkening.

"Don't touch it." 🔥

Maya stepped forward, tears finally spilling down her cheeks.

"She told me...

she said you already knew, Dad.

She said you agreed with her." 💔

The father's heart shattered.

He turned slowly toward his wife, his eyes cold and full of fury.

"How long has this been happening?"

He slowly swiped to the next photo on the screen.

It was a close-up image of a bedroom door sealed shut from the outside with a heavy, rusted padlock and a thick iron chain.

He held the screen inches from his wife's face, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

"What is that lock for?" 😨
