Chapter 2: Something Hidden Under the Mattress

The stepmother's face went pale.
For one long second, the entire room held its breath.
Then she laughed.
"You're overreacting," she said, smoothing her dress as if the conversation bored her.
"It was for her own safety.
She was wandering at night.
I was protecting her."
"Protecting her." The father's voice was barely a whisper.
"You locked my daughter in her room.
With a chain."
"She's dramatic, just like her mother was—"
"Don't." His hand shot up.
"Don't say another word about her mother."
Mia stepped closer, her voice shaking but steady.
"Dad, that's not all." She scrolled to another photo.
"Look at the date.
That was her birthday.
Maya spent her seventh birthday locked in that room.
We could hear her crying through the door.
Nobody came."
Maya hadn't moved.
She stood in the hallway still holding her plate, watching her father's face fall apart in real time.
💔
The stepmother turned toward Maya with a look that could freeze fire.
"You ungrateful little—"
"Enough." The father placed himself between them, his voice dropping to something cold and final.
"Go to your room, Maya.
Take Mia with you.
Right now."
As the girls reached the stairs, Maya stopped.
She turned back slowly.
"Dad," she said quietly.
"There's something else.
Under my mattress.
I've been hiding it for a long time."
The stepmother's composure shattered.
"Don't you dare—"
But Maya was already walking up the stairs.
😨
