Chapter 2: What Was Hidden in the Dress
The Bennett family arrived faster than I expected.
Maverick's father entered first.
Then his two brothers.
Then Mrs.
Bennett — still in her mother-of-the-groom dress, her corsage still pinned to her chest.
She looked at Penelope.
She looked at Maverick.
Then she looked at me.
"Amy…
what is this?"
I reached into my dress and pulled out the folder.
"This," I said, "is why I married him today."
Maverick's face changed completely.
"Where did you get that?"
I didn't answer him.
I opened the folder and placed the first document on the bed — right next to Penelope's purple dress.
His father stepped closer.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he went very still.
"Maverick." His voice was low.
"What did you do?"
"Dad, I can explain—"
"You told us that account was closed."
The room went silent.
Mrs.
Bennett reached for the document.
Her hands were shaking.
I watched her read it.
I watched the moment she understood.
"This is my sister's money," she whispered.
"This is Eleanor's inheritance."
Maverick turned to me, desperate now.
"Amy, please.
You don't understand the full story."
I looked at him one last time.
"I know exactly the full story, Maverick.
That's why I'm still standing here."
Then the door opened again.
And the person who walked in was the one person Maverick believed would never show up.
