Chapter 2: The Envelope That Silenced Everyone

Part 2 👇

Chloe collapsed onto the patio stones, sobbing so hard her whole body shook.

But Father didn't move.

He stood at the edge of the fire pit, watching the last of her dresses curl into ash, his expression unreadable.

Mother rushed forward, grabbing his arm.

"Richard, you've gone too far!

Those cost thousands!"

Father turned to look at her.

Just looked.

The silence was worse than anything he could have said.

"You knew she was saving for that dress," he finally said.

"You watched Chloe do it.

And you told Maya to stop making a scene."

Mother opened her mouth.

Closed it again.

"I've been watching this for years," Father said quietly.

"I just didn't want to believe it."

Chloe scrambled to her feet, mascara streaking her face.

"Dad, Maya always gets special treatment!

She's not even—"

She stopped herself.

The patio went absolutely silent.

I stared at my sister.

"Not even what, Chloe?"

She looked away fast.

Too fast.

Father's jaw tightened.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a folded envelope.

He didn't open it.

He just held it.

"There are things in this family," he said slowly, "that should have been said a long time ago."

Mother's face went pale.

Her eyes locked on that envelope like she'd seen it before.

Like she was terrified of it.

😰
