Chapter 2: The Ring He Gave to Someone Else

The three words the woman whispered were barely audible.

But the maid heard them clearly.

*"Don't open it."*

The husband froze.

"What did she say?"

The maid didn't answer.

She was already backing away from the coffin, her face white.

The lid shifted again.

The pale hand pressed harder against the broken wood.

Then a voice — thin, exhausted, but unmistakable — came from inside.

"Richard.

Stop them."

The husband's legs gave out.

He grabbed the edge of a chair.

"That's not Emily's voice."

The maid turned to face him.

"No.

It isn't."

A woman from the back of the room gasped.

Someone else whispered a name — a name that made three people in that room go completely still.

Because that name belonged to someone who had been reported m\*ssing eighteen months ago.

Someone the family had quietly stopped looking for.

The coffin lid shifted one final time.

And the hand that came through was wearing a ring.

A ring the husband recognized immediately.

Because he had given it to someone else entirely.

What Emily's husband saw on that ring exposed a secret the family had buried for years.
