Chapter 2: What Sophia Knew

**— PART 2 —**
The room went completely still.
My stepmother staggered backward, clutching the torn collar of her emerald gown, her face draining of all color.
For the first time I had ever seen, she looked genuinely afraid.
"How dare you—" she started.
"How dare I?" My father's voice was calm now.
That was worse.
"You stood in this house and destroyed the last thing her mother ever gave her.
And you call it *just a dress.*"
Her eyes darted around the room, searching for someone to back her up.
Nobody moved.
I was shaking, still holding the ruined ivory fabric against my shoulder.
Then my father turned to me, and his expression cracked — just for a moment — into something raw and broken.
"Go upstairs," he said quietly.
"I need to handle this."
But before I could move, my stepmother's daughter stepped forward from the corner of the room — the one who had been silent this whole time.
"Tell her the truth, Mom," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Tell her what you did to that dress *before* today."
My stepmother's face went white as a sheet.
"Sophia, don't you dare—"
"She deserves to know." 😶
The room felt like it stopped breathing entirely.
What truth was Sophia about to reveal — and why had her own mother been trying to bury it?
