Chapter 2: The Envelope From Ten Years Ago
The woman’s face burned as the Lamborghini vanished into traffic.
She grabbed her phone and searched David’s full name.
The first result made her freeze.
“No…
this can’t be him.”
A photograph showed David standing beside several business leaders.
Beneath it were the words: “Founder and CEO of Bennett International.”
Before she could read more, the hotel manager hurried outside.
“Ma’am, are you here for the executive position?”
She quickly locked her phone.
“Yes.
My interview is at noon.”
The manager glanced toward the road.
“You just missed the man making the final decision.”
Her stomach tightened.
“You mean David?”
“Mr.
David Bennett,” he replied.
“His company purchased this hotel last month.”
She stared at him.
“Please tell him I didn’t recognize him.
We used to be very close.”
The manager’s expression changed.
“He recognized you immediately.”
Her phone suddenly rang.
The caller ID displayed Bennett International.
She answered with a trembling hand.
“Hello?”
A woman’s voice said, “Mr.
David has reviewed your application.
But before he makes his decision, he wants you to answer one question about what happened ten years ago.”
Then the hotel doors opened, and someone the woman never expected stepped outside holding an old envelope with her name on it.
