Chapter 6: Everything Gerald Built

Robert answered on the first ring.
He listened without interrupting while Marcus spoke.
When Marcus finished, there were three seconds of silence.
"I'll be there in twenty minutes," Robert said.
He arrived in eighteen.
Lily was with him.
Sandra opened the door and the four of them stood in the entryway for a moment — a woman who had been hiding for seventeen years, a man who had spent seventeen years not knowing why, a boy who had grown up on a lie, and a girl whose prom corsage was still in her jacket pocket.
Nobody said anything dramatic.
Sandra stepped back and let them in.
They sat in the living room.
Marcus put the envelope on the coffee table.
Robert picked it up, read the back of the photograph, and set it down without expression.
"When did Daniel take over the family business?" Marcus asked.
"Gerald d*ed four years ago," Robert said.
"Daniel was running it within six months.
Import and export, officially.
But Gerald always had side interests that didn't appear in any filing." He looked at Sandra.
"Did Gerald know about the pregnancy before you left?"
"He suspected.
He didn't have proof."
"But Daniel might have gone looking for proof after his father d*ed," Lily said.
"If Gerald left records — notes, letters, anything — Daniel could have found them and started connecting the pieces."
Sandra nodded slowly.
"Gerald kept everything.
He was meticulous.
It was one of the things that made him dangerous."
"So Daniel finds his father's records," Marcus said.
"Finds out about you and Robert.
Finds out there may have been a child.
Spends a few years tracking it down." He looked at the photograph.
"And then sends this."
"But what does he want?" Lily asked.
"Gerald wanted Sandra back.
What does Daniel want?"
The room went quiet.
Robert was the one who answered.
"Gerald's will left the majority of the estate in trust," he said.
"I looked into it after the conference — after Daniel asked about Sandra.
The trust has a specific condition." He paused.
"If Gerald had a biological child, that child inherits a controlling share.
Daniel's portion drops significantly."
Marcus stared at him.
"Gerald thought I might be his," he said.
"Gerald may have believed — or convinced himself — that Sandra was already carrying his child when she left.
Whether that was delusion or something he genuinely believed, I don't know.
But if he put it in the will—"
"Then Daniel has been looking for me," Marcus said, "because if I exist and I'm Gerald's son, he loses half his inheritance." He sat back.
"And if I'm not Gerald's son — if I'm yours — he loses nothing.
But he needs to know for certain."
"Or he needs to make sure you never find out," Lily said quietly.
Everyone looked at her.
"That photograph isn't a greeting," she said.
"It's a warning.
He's not reaching out.
He's telling your mother to stay quiet." She looked at Sandra.
"He doesn't want Marcus to know about the will.
Because if Marcus knows, Marcus might file a claim.
And even a failed claim means lawyers, investigations, and people looking closely at Gerald's estate."
Sandra picked up the envelope and turned it over in her hands.
"He's been watching us for months," she said.
"He knows where we live.
He knows Marcus is in Claremont." She looked at Robert.
"And now he knows Marcus found you."
Robert's phone was already in his hand.
"I know an attorney," he said.
"She handles estate litigation.

We need to document everything tonight — the photograph, the postmark, the timeline." He looked around the room.
"And we need to do it before Daniel decides a warning isn't enough."
