Chapter 2: The Envelope He Left Behind

She pushed past the older woman and walked straight into the house.

"I want proof," she snapped.

"Show me the documents."

The mother didn't flinch.

She walked to the dining table, opened a folder, and slid a single page across the surface.

"Company registration.

Dated nine years ago.

My name.

My signature."

She stared at the paper.

Her hands were shaking.

"This can't be legal.

My lawyer will fight this."

"Your lawyer," the mother said quietly, "already called this morning.

He told you to settle.

You didn't listen."

She felt something cold move through her chest.

"Where is he?" she demanded.

"Where did your son go?"

The mother looked at her for a long moment.

"He's gone.

And he left something for you."

She reached into the folder and placed a small envelope on the table.

On the front, written in his handwriting, were four words:

*You always knew why.*

She didn't open it.

She couldn't move.

Then her phone rang.

It was her own lawyer.

"We have a problem," he said.

"A serious one.

There's a second document we never saw."
