Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn’t His

The banquet manager turned the tablet toward Ethan.
“Sir, there are three recordings.
You need to see the one from the service corridor first.”
Vanessa reached for it.
“This is my wedding.
Turn that off.”
“Why are you afraid?” Ethan asked.
Emily’s hands began to shake.
“Ethan, please.
I didn’t want you to find out like this.”
The footage showed Margaret cornering Emily before the reception.
“You were told not to come,” Margaret said on the recording.
“If Ethan sees you, everything could fall apart.”
Then Vanessa appeared and snatched an envelope from Emily’s hand.
“You’ll keep quiet until he signs the papers,” Vanessa warned.
“After today, it won’t matter what you tell him.”
Ethan stared at his bride.
“What papers?”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“She’s twisting this.
Emily has always hated me.”
“I came because Dad asked me to protect you,” Emily whispered.
“That envelope was his final warning.”
The room fell silent.
The manager paused the footage and enlarged one frame.
Vanessa was holding a document bearing Ethan’s signature—but Ethan had never seen it before.
Then Margaret suddenly said, “If he learns who really signed that, we lose everything.”
Ethan slowly turned toward her.
“Who signed my name?”
Before Margaret could answer, a man at the back of the ballroom stood up.
“I did,” he said.
“But that isn’t the worst thing they asked me to do.”
