Chapter 1: The Table She Set for Herself

Simone Hart had been preparing this dinner for a month.
She was seated at a round table in the finest restaurant in the city, in an emerald green dress and diamond earrings, laughing with three friends under the crystal chandelier.
She had been married to Calvin for four years.
For the last six months she had been quietly meeting with a lawyer, and tonight the papers were finally ready.
She had asked Calvin to stop by the restaurant "to pick something up." She wanted him to see it in front of an audience.
Calvin stepped into the dining room in a black suit, composed and unhurried.
He stopped beside the table.
Simone pushed the bound stack of papers in front of her without looking up, and he stood there for a moment and read the top page.
"What is this?"
Simone glanced at the papers.
The corner of her mouth curled.
"It's divorce papers."
She leaned back in her chair and raised her chin.
"Everything you own is about to be mine."
Her friends laughed softly and exchanged glances.
Calvin did not argue.
He folded his arms and watched her, and his voice was so even it was hard to read.
"I knew this day would come."
He paused.
"Everything is in my mother's name."
The smile left Simone's face gradually.
Her eyes widened, and the glass in her hand stopped in mid-air.
Her friends stopped laughing and turned to stare at her, and no one said a word.
Calvin remained where he was, quiet and still.
---
Calvin just turned the whole table.
Did Simone really think she had it all planned?
