Chapter 2: What He Let Her Find

Simone set the glass down slowly.
Her hands were not steady.
"That's not possible," she said.
"I had everything checked."
Calvin didn't move.
"Did you?" he said.
"Or did you only check what I let you find?"
One of her friends leaned forward and whispered something.
Simone shook her head and kept her eyes on Calvin.
"The house," she said.
"The accounts.
The business."
"All of it," Calvin said.
"Every single asset.
Transferred legally, eighteen months ago."
Simone's lawyer had told her this divorce would leave her very comfortable.
She had planned the restaurant.
She had chosen the dress.
She had invited the audience.
Now her friends were looking at her the way strangers look at an accident.
"You knew," she said quietly.
"I knew the day you started locking your phone," Calvin said.
"I just gave you enough time to feel certain."
He picked up the divorce papers, folded them once, and placed them back in front of her.
"Sign whatever you want, Simone.
It won't change the numbers."
He turned to leave.
Then he stopped.
"My mother wants to speak with you," he said.
"She knows something about your lawyer that you don't."
He walked out without looking back.
Simone sat completely still.
Her friends said nothing.
And somewhere across the room, a phone began to ring.
