Chapter 5: The Woman Richard Could Not Silence

Elaine carried the box into the dining room and set it beside the cooling turkey.

Richard blocked her chair.

“You signed a confidentiality agreement.”

“I signed an agreement not to reveal legitimate company business,” Elaine said.

“Forgery was never legitimate.”

“You were dismissed for misconduct.”

“I resigned after you ordered me to alter the pension ledger.”

Claire opened the box.

Inside were account statements, handwritten notes, and a small digital recorder sealed in a plastic bag.

“Why didn’t you give these to me six years ago?” Claire asked.

“I tried.

Your father’s lawyer returned every letter.”

Richard folded his arms.

“A box of old paper from a bitter former employee changes nothing.”

Elaine picked up the recorder.

“Then perhaps your own voice will.”

She pressed the button.

Richard’s recorded voice filled the room.

“Use Claire’s authorization.

Tyler can witness it.”

Elaine’s younger voice answered, “Claire refused.”

“Then copy the signature from her employment agreement.”

Tyler sat down hard.

On the recording, Elaine said, “That is forgery.”

Richard replied, “That is survival.”

The recording ended.

Patricia stared at her husband.

“You told me Claire had signed before she became confused.”

“She had agreed in principle.”

Claire stepped closer.

“I said no seven times.”

“And I saved this family seven times while you sat in judgment.”

“You took money people had worked thirty years to earn.”

“I borrowed it.”

“You hid it.”

“I restored most of it.”

“Most?” Tyler looked up.

“You said all of it.”

Richard’s phone rang.

He answered immediately.

“Martin, proceed.”

Adrian’s expression sharpened.

“Proceed with what?”

Richard put the call on speaker.

Martin Hale’s voice came through.

“The emergency filing is complete.

Northstar’s vote on the Whitmore transaction is temporarily frozen pending investigation of Claire Vale’s use of confidential records.”

Claire stared at Adrian.

“He filed against me?”

Richard smiled.

“You obtained internal information through Elaine.

You used it to block a transaction while secretly controlling Northstar stock.

That looks very different outside this room.”

Elaine shook her head.

“Claire never received these records.”

“Prove it.”

Adrian reached for his phone, but Richard raised one finger.

“If Northstar challenges the order tonight, I release Claire’s medical file, her separation agreement, and the statement she signed admitting impaired judgment.”

“I signed no such statement,” Claire said.

“Another forgery?” Richard shrugged.

“How convenient.”

Patricia whispered, “Richard, there was a doctor.”

“There was a paid evaluator,” Claire answered.

“He spoke to me for twelve minutes.”

Richard leaned close to her.

“Walk away, and I will restore your share of the family trust.

I will even announce that our disagreement was a misunderstanding.”

“You want to buy my silence with money that was already mine.”

“I am offering you a life without scandal.”

Adrian stepped between them.

“She already has one.”

Martin’s voice remained on the speaker.

“Richard, the order has been granted.

Northstar cannot vote, transfer records, or interfere with Whitmore Holdings until Monday’s hearing.”

Richard ended the call.

“You wanted the truth?” he said to Claire.

“Now you can explain it to a judge while every financial paper in the country calls you a vindictive daughter.”

Adrian’s phone lit up with the court notice.

Claire read the first line twice.

Her voting authority had been suspended.

Richard lifted his glass from the table and smiled.

“For the next seventy-two hours, Claire, Northstar belongs to its other shareholders.”

Adrian looked at the second page.

“And Martin Hale controls their votes.”
