Chapter 7: The Vote at Eight O’Clock

At eight the next morning, Claire entered Northstar’s boardroom with Adrian, Elaine, Vanessa, Tyler, and Patricia.

Richard sat beside Martin Hale, smiling at the temporary court order displayed on the screen.

Martin tapped his folder.

“Mrs.

Vale may observe, but she cannot vote.”

Claire took the empty chair opposite her father.

“Then I will observe you explain the forged documents.”

Richard leaned back.

“Those documents have not been authenticated.”

Elaine placed the original ledger on the table.

“The paper, ink, and entries can all be dated.”

Martin barely glanced at it.

“Material obtained unlawfully is inadmissible.”

“This is not a courtroom,” Adrian said.

“It is a board deciding whether to hand you nine hundred million dollars.”

Richard addressed the directors.

“Claire concealed her identity as Northstar’s controlling shareholder while pursuing a personal vendetta.

Her judgment cannot be trusted.”

Claire slid copies of Tyler’s practice pages down the table.

“Ask my brother whose handwriting that is.”

Tyler stood.

His hands shook, but his voice carried.

“It is mine.

Richard Whitmore ordered me to copy Claire’s signature.

I witnessed the transfer document even though Claire was not there.”

Richard’s chair struck the wall as he rose.

“If you say another word, you lose your job, your trust, and your home.”

Tyler looked at him.

“You put the apartment in the company’s name so you could say that.”

“I gave you everything.”

“You gave me things I was too frightened to refuse.”

Martin gathered his papers.

“This meeting is compromised.”

Vanessa closed the door.

“Sit down, Martin.”

He stared at her.

She placed her phone beside his folder.

“I found your messages to Dad.

You demanded two percent of the partnership for keeping the pension deficit out of Northstar’s board packet.”

Martin’s face emptied.

Richard pointed at Vanessa.

“She stole private communications.”

“I photographed them from the laptop you ordered me to destroy.”

Claire turned to the directors.

“You can believe my father, or you can listen to him.”

Patricia connected her old phone to the conference speaker.

Richard’s recorded threat filled the room, followed by his instructions to discredit Claire.

One director shut his folder.

Another removed the partnership resolution from the agenda.

Richard looked at Claire.

“End this now.

I will return the trust, the Connecticut house, and every share your grandmother intended for you.”

“You said those were never mine.”

“I am saying they can be.”

“In exchange for silence?”

“In exchange for loyalty.”

Claire pushed the offer back across the table.

“Loyalty that must be purchased is fear.”

Adrian’s lawyer entered with a new court order.

“The judge dissolved the restriction,” she said.

“The first filing omitted Mr.

Whitmore’s financial interest and Mr.

Hale’s side agreement.”

Martin reached for his phone.

Adrian took the partnership resolution from him.

“Northstar’s independent directors have voted,” Adrian said.

“The Whitmore transaction is rejected.

Martin, your authority is suspended pending a formal investigation.”

Two building security officers appeared outside the glass doors.

Richard looked around the table.

“You cannot remove me from my own company.”

Tyler placed a second document before him.

“The Whitmore directors met by video at seven-thirty.

You are suspended as chairman.”

Richard’s mouth opened, but no words came.

Claire stood.

“The pension records go to the regulators this morning.

The employees will be repaid before any executive receives another dollar.”

Richard stepped close enough that only she and Adrian could hear him.

“You think he came into your life by accident?”

Claire did not move.

Richard smiled once more.

“Ask your husband why he met Elaine two years before he met you.”
