Chapter 2: The Message on Sophie’s Phone

Lauren’s face turned pale.
“You can’t humiliate me like this,” she whispered.
“My family paid for half this reception.”
Daniel held up the ring.
“Then send me the bill.”
Guests began murmuring.
Lauren’s mother rushed forward and pointed at Margaret.
“That woman ruined everything!
She has never accepted my daughter.”
Margaret lowered her eyes.
“I came to welcome her into our family.”
“With cheap flowers?” Lauren snapped.
“You wanted to embarrass me.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“You embarrassed yourself.”
Lauren grabbed his sleeve.
“Daniel, please.
I was nervous.
It was one mistake.”
“You called my mother useless, then sl*pped her in front of everyone.”
Suddenly, Lauren’s maid of honor, Sophie, rose from her seat.
“It wasn’t one mistake.”
Lauren froze.
“Sit down, Sophie.”
But Sophie walked toward Daniel with her phone trembling in her hand.
“She sent me these messages this morning,” Sophie said.
“I thought she was only angry.
I didn’t know she would actually do it.”
“Do what?” Daniel demanded.
Lauren lunged for the phone, but Sophie pulled it away.
On the screen was a message sent by Lauren just hours before the ceremony.
Daniel read the first line—and slowly looked up at his bride.
