Chapter 1: The Girl They Underestimated

The cafeteria hummed with the usual afternoon chaos — clinking silverware, distant laughter, and the steady murmur of students unwinding between classes.
Seated alone at a quiet corner table, Maya adjusted her thick-rimmed glasses and leaned over her open textbook, completely absorbed in her studies.
She was laser-focused, trying to commit complex anatomical diagrams to memory, completely oblivious to the room around her.
Without warning, two shadows fell over her desk.
Brandon and his perpetual sidekick, Marcus, sauntered up behind her, exchanging sly, mean-spirited grins.
Brandon held a half-full bottle of water, sloshing it deliberately.
With a smirk, he tilted the bottle directly over Maya's head.
A cold, heavy stream of water splashed down on her hair, running down her face and soaking through the crisp pages of her textbook.
The loud, mocking laughter of the two guys echoed across the surrounding tables as Maya sat frozen for a brief second, cold water dripping from her chin onto the ruined pages.
Slowly, the shock melted into a sharp, icy clarity.
Maya drew a quiet breath, wiped her wet brow, and deliberately closed the drenched textbook with a soft, heavy thud.
She didn't flinch.
She didn't cry.
Brandon, amused by her silence, stepped closer and casually placed his heavy hand onto her shoulder, chuckling as if they were old friends sharing a joke.
"What's the matter, nerd?
Need to cool off?"
That single touch broke the dam.
In one explosive, fluid motion, Maya launched herself out of the chair.
Before Brandon could even register the movement, her palm drove upward into his chest with immense force, knocking the breath straight out of his lungs.
Marcus lunged forward to grab her, but Maya pivoted smoothly, ducking under his reach and executing a swift, powerful spinning strike that caught him completely off balance.
In less than three seconds, both guys crashed heavily to the cafeteria floor in a humiliating heap, groaning in sheer disbelief while the entire room went dead silent.
Maya stood tall over them, her breathing steady, her eyes locked onto the two bewildered bullies sprawled on the linoleum.

She straightened her wet sweater, looked down at them with absolute disdain, and broke the stunned silence.
"I study karate, too, nerds."
