Chapter 2: Four Words

The venue manager's voice was calm but firm.

"I'm sorry to bother you the night before your wedding.

But we still haven't received the deposit.

tomorrow, we'll have to release the date."

My legs went weak.

I hung up and turned to my stepdad.

"Please.

The wedding is tomorrow.

He picked up on the third ring.

"Hey, sweetheart.

Big day tomorrow."

"Dad, I need you to pay the venue deposit.

Forty thousand dollars.

Tonight."

Silence.

Then a short laugh.

"Where am I supposed to get forty thousand dollars by tonight?"

He finally looked at me.

Then my fiancé walked through the front door.

He looked at my face.

Then at my stepdad.

Then at the bill still sitting on the table.

"What's going on?"
