Chapter 2: The Second Bottle
Valerio held the second bottle under the light.
No pharmacy label.
No doctor's name.
Just the same printed sticker as the first — copied perfectly.
"Who refilled this?" he said quietly.
No one answered.
Dr.
Cole took it from his hands and opened it carefully.
He smelled it once.
Then his jaw tightened.
"This isn't her medication."
Alessia looked up from the chair where she'd been placed.
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
"I've been taking those for four months."
The room went still.
Valerio turned slowly toward Veronica.
She was standing near the door.
Arms crossed.
Eyes moving too fast.
"I don't know anything about that," she said.
"You refill her prescriptions," Valerio said.
"You have since March."
"I was helping—"
"You were the only one with access to this cabinet."
Veronica's chin lifted.
"You can't seriously think I would—"
"Dr.
Cole." Valerio didn't look away from her.
"What would these pills do over four months?"
The doctor hesitated.
Then he said two words that made Alessia's hand go to her mouth.
And made Veronica take one step toward the door.
