Chapter 2: The Missing College Fund

My stepsister’s mother stepped in front of him.
“You can’t throw us out over a dress and a handbag.
This is my home too.”
My father looked directly at her.
“Your name isn’t on this house.
Pack your things.”
My stepsister’s smug face vanished.
“Mom, you said he would never choose her over us!”
I stood frozen beside the fire pit, tears still running down my cheeks.
Then my father’s phone lit up.
He glanced at the screen, and his calm expression suddenly changed.
“What is it?” I whispered.
He turned the phone toward me.
It was a bank alert showing that nearly all the money in my college savings account had been transferred that morning.
My stomach dropped.
“I didn’t authorize that.”
My stepsister looked at her mother.
Her mother quickly grabbed her arm and said, “Go upstairs.
Now.”
“No one is going anywhere,” my father replied.
“The bank sent me the security image.”
Her mother went pale.
“Whatever you think you saw, there’s an explanation.”
My father slowly enlarged the image.
Then he looked from the woman he had married to the girl standing beside her.
“Why were both of you at the bank using my daughter’s identification?”
Neither of them answered—but my stepsister suddenly burst into tears and whispered, “Mom said she would never find out.”
