Chapter 2: What the Father Signed

The doors hadn't even closed behind them when she screamed.

"You walk out that door and you get NOTHING!" the bride shrieked, her voice cracking across the ballroom like a whip.

"You hear me?

NOTHING!"

The groom didn't stop.

He didn't turn around.

His father reached up with one trembling hand and placed it over his son's hand on the wheelchair grip.

That was all.

No words.

Just that.

But then the bride's mother stood up from the front row.

"Let them go," she said quietly, smoothing her emerald dress with both hands.

A thin smile crossed her lips.

"The cottage transfers automatically.

We made sure of that."

The groom stopped.

He turned slowly.

"What did you just say?"

The woman met his eyes without blinking.

"Your father signed something a long time ago.

Before today.

Before any of this." She tilted her head exactly the way her daughter had.

"Didn't he tell you?"

Every head in the room turned toward the wheelchair.

The old man's face had gone completely still.

His hands were no longer trembling.

And for the first time, he wouldn't look his son in the eye.
