Chapter 2: The Document on the Bar

Vanessa wasn't finished.

"I gave up everything for this family," she said, sweeping her arm across the ruined ballroom.

"My career.

My freedom.

My life.

And you walk in here like some hero?"

Nathan said nothing.

He turned and walked back to the girls.

He came back carrying Lily.

She had fallen asleep against his shoulder, her bare feet still cold, one small hand gripping his collar like she was afraid he would disappear again.

The room went very still.

Vanessa's expression shifted — not to guilt, but to something colder.

"Don't make this a scene," she said quietly.

"Call your lawyer," Nathan said.

"Tonight."

She laughed once, short and hard.

"You wouldn't dare.

Half of Caldwell Systems is in my name.

Did you forget that?"

Nathan looked at her over Lily's sleeping head.

"I didn't forget," he said.

"But I think you forgot something too."

He reached into his coat pocket and placed a folded document on the bar.

Vanessa's smile didn't move.

But her eyes dropped to the paper.

And for the first time all night, she didn't say a word.

From the hallway, a small voice broke the silence.

It was Emma.

"Daddy," she whispered, "she locks the door at night.

So we can't come downstairs."
