Chapter 3: What the Document Said

Nathan carried Lily to the sofa in the east sitting room and laid her down with the care of a man who understood, too late, what gentleness cost when it arrived six months overdue.

He pulled a throw blanket over her bare feet.

Emma stood in the doorway watching him.

Sophie pressed against Emma's side.

Grace held the back of Emma's nightgown in both fists.

"Are you staying?" Emma asked.

"Yes," Nathan said.

"You said that before."

He didn't answer that.

There was no answer that would hold.

He settled all three of them onto the sofa beside Lily, found a second blanket in the cabinet Claire had always kept stocked, and covered them together.

Then he walked back to the ballroom.

Vanessa had not touched the document.

She stood where he had left her, arms crossed, diamonds still catching the firelight.

The ruined ballroom surrounded her — lobster shells, champagne puddles, overturned glasses — and she looked at none of it.

"You want to tell me what that is?" she said.

"You already know."

"Nathan." Her voice dropped to the register she used when she wanted to sound reasonable.

"Whatever you think you found, let's talk about it like adults.

Not like this."

"Like what?"

"Like you're trying to punish me."

Nathan picked up the document and unfolded it on the bar between them.

It was a transfer authorization.

Caldwell Systems, subsidiary account.

Forty-one transactions over eight months.

The receiving account number was printed at the bottom in small clean type.

Nathan had circled it in red pen on the flight from New York.

"That account," he said, "is registered to a shell company called Vela Group.

Vela Group has one director." He tapped the page.

"Your brother, Marcus."

Vanessa's jaw moved once.

Nothing came out.

"The transfers started four weeks after we married," Nathan said.

"They stopped two weeks ago.

Total amount is just under three million dollars."

"That is not what it looks like."

"Tell me what it looks like."

She reached for the document.

He pulled it back.

"Marcus needed capital," she said.

"It was a loan.

I was going to tell you."

"You were going to tell me."

"Yes."

"After eight months."

"The timing was never right.

You were never here." Her voice climbed.

"You left me alone in this house with four children who are not mine, Nathan.

Four.

I was twenty-nine years old.

Do you understand what that was like?"

"I understand that you took three million dollars from my company."

"Our company."

"You earned forty percent of Caldwell Systems through a prenuptial agreement that required you to remain a full partner in the household management of this family." Nathan's voice stayed level.

"The girls were starved on Christmas Eve.

I don't think the agreement holds."

The fire crackled.

Vanessa's hand moved to her diamond necklace and stopped there.

"You can't prove I knew about the food," she said.

"Emma told me you lock their door at night."

"That is a lie.

She is five years old and she is dramatic, just like her father."

"Sophie," Nathan said, "told me the same thing twenty minutes ago.

Unprompted.

While I was tucking her in." He folded the document and put it back in his coat.

"Grace showed me the inside of the lock.

There are scratch marks on the frame.

Small ones.

About the height of a child's hand."

Vanessa went very still.

"I want you out of this house by morning," Nathan said.

Her stillness broke.

"You are not doing this to me.

Not on Christmas.

Not after everything I have given this family."

"Call Marcus.

Tell him to enjoy the money.

You're going to need a place to stay."

He turned toward the hallway.

"Nathan." Her voice cracked on his name for the first time.

"If you do this, I will take half of everything.

You know I will.

My lawyers will bury you for two years.

The girls will be in depositions.

Is that what you want for them?"

He stopped walking.

He did not turn around.

"Merry Christmas, Vanessa," he said.

May you like

He walked back to his daughters.

Behind him, he heard her pick up her phone.
