Chapter 1: The Notebook They Never Meant to Leave Behind

The Mother-in-Law snatched the shawl from her seven-month pregnant Daughter-in-Law.

Bruises were visible across her arms.

She immediately panicked.

"Cover those before your father sees."

Too late.

Her Father stepped into the room.

The Pregnant Wife hurried toward him.

"Dad…

take me home."

Her Husband grabbed her arm.

"She falls all the time.

She blames me."

Her Father tore his hand away.

Then noticed something beneath the fallen baby-shower gifts.

A small notebook.

The Mother-in-Law lunged for it.

He picked it up first.

Inside were handwritten dates.

"Left arm — covered by shawl."

"Shoulder — use long sleeves."

"Next appointment — Husband answers questions."

The room went silent.

The Father slowly looked at his son-in-law.

Then at the Mother-in-Law.

"You weren't hiding bruises today."

His voice hardened.

"You've been keeping track of how to hide them for months."

The Pregnant Wife whispered:

"They never let me see the doctor alone."

Her Husband went pale.

Her Father closed the notebook.

"You made my daughter cover the evidence."

His eyes hardened.

"Now you just handed it to me."
