Chapter 2: The Message Nobody Was Supposed to See

Her Father didn't move.
He just stood there, holding the notebook, reading every entry.
The room was completely still.
Then the Mother-in-Law stepped forward.
"You don't understand what she's like.
She's dramatic.
She exaggerates everything."
Her Father didn't look up.
"There are fourteen entries in here."
He turned to the last page.
"Fourteen times someone wrote down how to hide what was done to my daughter."
The Husband finally spoke.
"She wrote that herself.
She's trying to trap us."
The Pregnant Wife flinched.
Her Father looked at her — really looked at her — for the first time since walking in.
Her hands were shaking.
Her eyes were fixed on the floor.
He walked to her slowly and lifted her sleeve.
She didn't stop him.
The bruise on her shoulder was still yellow at the edges.
Old.
Weeks old.
"How long?" he asked quietly.
She didn't answer.
She didn't have to.
Because at that moment, her phone lit up on the table.
A message.
From a number saved only as a single letter.
Everyone in the room saw the first line of the notification before she could reach it.
*"Did they find out?
Don't say anything.
I'll handle the doctor."*
Her Father picked up the phone.
