Chapter 1: The Last Delicious Meal of Your Lives

The shrimp platter left Jessica's hands before I realized she actually meant to throw it.
Cold leftovers and broth struck both of my daughters.
Megan screamed as the liquid soaked the front of her floral dress.
Jessica laughed.
"Oh, how clumsy of me.
My hand slipped."
I dropped beside Megan while Olivia stood trembling next to us.
Then Michael stepped between us and the doorway.
My husband looked at the food scattered across the floor.
"Pick it up.
It's still perfectly good."
I slowly rose to my feet.
"You've been embarrassing yourself with my money."
His face changed.
Jessica stopped smiling.
David went still beside his seventieth-birthday cake.
I pulled my arm away when Michael reached for me, then shoved both hands beneath the banquet table.
The entire feast overturned.
Crystal shattered.
Silverware skidded across the floor.
Everyone screamed.
I stared straight at them.
"I accidentally knocked over the last delicious meal of your lives."
And across the wrecked dining room, David whispered one question that told me my suspicion was bigger than a birthday dinner.

"Emily…
