Chapter 2: Who Is That Calling?

No one moved.
The broken crystal and scattered silverware lay between us like a battlefield neither side had expected.
David's question still hung in the air.
*Who showed you the accounts?*
Michael's hand dropped to his side.
He wasn't angry anymore.
He was calculating.
"Emily." His voice had gone very quiet.
"Answer him."
I looked at David — this man I had called my father-in-law for twenty-three years — and watched the color drain from his face.
"I found them myself," I said.
"Every transfer.
Every account.
Every name."
Jessica made a sound that wasn't quite a laugh.
Michael stepped toward me.
"You don't understand what you're looking at."
"Three accounts," I said.
"Opened the same month we got married.
And one of them has Jessica's name on it."
The room went completely still.
Then David's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Something shifted behind his eyes — fear, or something older than fear.
He rejected the call.
It rang again immediately.
Michael turned to look at him, and for the first time all evening, my husband seemed unsure of something.
"Dad," Michael said slowly.
"Who is that?"

David set the phone face-down on the table without answering.
And that silence told me the accounts were only the beginning of what I didn't know.
