Chapter 2: What the Mother Saw

Daniel's voice dropped to something cold and quiet.
"What do you mean, not the first time?"
Claire tightened her arms around the little boy before she answered.
"Last Tuesday, when you were at the office.
She locked him in the storage room for two hours.
He was screaming.
She told me if I said anything, she'd have me fired before dinner."
The bride's expression shifted fast — from nervous to sharp.
"That is a lie.
She's obsessed with your son.
She's trying to turn him against me before we've even started our life together."
Daniel looked down at his boy.
"Ethan." His voice was gentle.
"Did she put you in a room before tonight?"
The child didn't answer with words.
He just nodded.
Once.
Slowly.
Something in Daniel's face went very still.
😶
Then a voice came from the top of the staircase.
An older woman — Daniel's mother — stood there in her evening dress, one hand gripping the railing.
She had clearly heard everything.
"Daniel," she said quietly.
"There's something I should have told you three weeks ago."
The bride spun toward her.
"Don't—"
"I saw her," his mother said.
"I didn't want to ruin the wedding.
I thought I was wrong." Her eyes filled.
"I wasn't wrong." 😔
The hallway felt like it was closing in.
