Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Photograph

Aaliyah stared at the lawyer.

“My mother had an estate?”

Dad’s face suddenly lost all color.

Her sister folded her arms.

“This has to be a mistake.

Mom never left her anything.”

The lawyer opened his briefcase.

“There is no mistake.

Your mother signed these documents shortly before she passed.”

“Let me see them,” Dad demanded, stepping forward.

The lawyer pulled the folder away.

“Only Aaliyah is authorized to receive them.”

Aaliyah’s hands trembled as she accepted a thick envelope.

Inside was a deed, a bank statement, and a sealed letter with her name written across the front.

Her sister glanced at the statement—and her confident smile vanished.

“That can’t be the amount,” she whispered.

But Dad wasn’t looking at the money.

He was staring at the deed.

“Aaliyah, give me that,” he said sharply.

“You don’t understand what your mother did.”

“Then explain it to me.”

Before Dad could answer, the lawyer placed an old photograph on the table.

It showed Aaliyah’s mother standing beside a large house—and next to her was a man Aaliyah had never seen.

She turned the photograph over and read the message on the back.

Then she looked at Dad.

“Why does this say you lied to me for eighteen years?”

Dad froze as the lawyer reached for one final document.
