Chapter 7: The Day the Lies Spoke Back

The emergency hearing began at nine the next morning.

Marcus sat beside Grant and a gray-haired attorney.

Aaliyah and Nia sat together behind Daniel.

Judge Helen Price examined the petition.

“Mr.

Carter alleges that his daughter and Mr.

Mercer used an invalid trust to seize family property.”

Marcus stood.

“My daughter is young and easily influenced.”

Aaliyah rose.

“I’m young, not invisible.”

The judge nodded toward Daniel.

“Call your first witness.”

Ruth took the witness chair.

“Did Evelyn Carter revoke Marcus Carter’s authority?” Daniel asked.

“Yes.

I watched her sign the revocation.”

Marcus’s attorney approached.

“You were paid by Evelyn, correct?”

“For twenty-two years.”

“So your loyalty was to her.”

Ruth looked at Marcus.

“My loyalty is to what I saw.”

Daniel connected the flash drive to a courtroom screen.

Evelyn appeared in the same room at Rosewood.

A notary and two physicians sat beside her.

“If Marcus challenges this trust,” Evelyn said on the recording, “ask First County Bank for the transfers approved by Grant Keller.

Grant knows they were not mine.”

Grant pushed back from the table.

“That recording could be altered.”

Daniel held up a certificate.

“The court’s digital examiner authenticated it this morning.”

The judge turned to Grant.

“Did you authorize those transfers?”

“My bank processed valid requests.”

Elena Alvarez entered the courtroom carrying a locked document case.

Grant whispered, “What is she doing here?”

Elena took the witness chair.

“Mr.

Keller ordered me to delete the device logs.

I preserved them instead.”

Daniel placed the logs before the judge.

“What do they show?”

“Seventeen withdrawals originated from Marcus Carter’s home network.

Six were approved from Mr.

Keller’s office after business hours.”

Grant pointed at Marcus.

“He told me Evelyn had agreed.”

Marcus stood.

“You took your share.”

The courtroom went silent.

Grant stared at him.

“You promised my name would never appear.”

Judge Price removed her glasses.

“Gentlemen, I suggest you stop speaking until counsel advises you.”

Nia rose from her seat.

“Your Honor, may I say something?”

Marcus’s attorney objected, but the judge allowed Daniel to call her.

Nia sat in the witness chair and faced her father.

“Who bought your BMW?” Daniel asked.

“My father said he did.

The payment came from my trust.”

“Did Aaliyah know about the trust before her birthday?”

“No.”

Marcus shook his head at her.

“After everything I gave you.”

Nia’s voice trembled.

“You gave me things so I wouldn’t ask where they came from.”

“You ungrateful little—”

“Mr.

Carter,” the judge warned.

Daniel held up Evelyn’s phone.

“The $90,000 withdrawal was submitted at eight forty-two.

Security footage shows where Aaliyah was at that time.”

The screen showed Aaliyah standing inside a bakery, buying the birthday cake while Nia waited beside her.

Daniel changed the image.

Marcus appeared at his kitchen table holding Evelyn’s phone.

The image had come from the home security camera.

Marcus turned toward Grant.

“You said that camera was disabled.”

Grant lowered his head.

Judge Price signed an order.

“The freeze against Aaliyah Carter is dissolved.

The Rosewood sale is void.

All trust authority claimed by Marcus Carter is terminated.”

Two financial investigators stepped through the courtroom doors.

One approached Grant.

“Mr.

Keller, come with us.”

Grant’s attorney caught his sleeve.

“Say nothing.”

The second investigator faced Marcus.

“Marcus Carter, we have a warrant to search your home and take you into custody on charges involving forgery, theft, and conspiracy.”

Marcus backed away.

“My daughters need me.”

Aaliyah stood.

“We needed a father.

You needed access.”

He looked at Nia.

“If you let them take me, you’ll have no one.”

Nia wiped her face.

“I have my sister.”

As the investigator reached for him, Marcus twisted free and grabbed Evelyn’s phone from the evidence table.

“I’ll destroy every lie on this thing!”

A court officer caught his arm.

The phone slipped, struck the carpet, and remained intact.

Marcus stopped fighting.

He looked at Aaliyah as the investigators led him toward the side door.

“You think your mother trusted you?” he said.

“Ask Daniel what she ordered you to do if Nia ever learned the truth.”
