Chapter 2: The Name on the Wall

The silence lasted maybe three seconds.
Then Marcus laughed again — but it was shorter this time.
Nervous.
"What are you doing?" he said.
"Put the phone down."
I didn't.
"Mr.
Hargrove is still on the line," I told him quietly.
"He heard everything."
The mistress set down my wineglass.
Slowly.
Marcus stepped toward me.
"This is my house.
My company.
You signed nothing."
"I signed everything," I said.
"You just never read what you were countersigning."
His face changed.
Not anger.
Something closer to fear.
He grabbed his own phone and called someone — I could see the name on the screen.
His lawyer.
No answer.
He tried again.
Nothing.
"They're not picking up, Marcus," I said.
"Because they already know."
The mistress touched his arm.
"What does she mean she signed everything?"
He didn't answer her.
He was staring at the company name on the wall — the framed logo he'd hung himself, proud as anything.
He had never once asked what the name meant.
It was my grandmother's maiden name.
My daughter made a small sound against my chest.
I held her tighter.
"You have one hour to leave," I said.
"Both of you."
