Chapter 2: The Man at the Locked Doors
Ethan threw himself across the c0ffin.
“You’re not taking her anywhere!”
Richard tightened his grip on the g*n.
“Move, Ethan.
You don’t understand what your mother has done.”
Claire struck the lid again, harder this time.
One guest grabbed a chair while another quietly raised her phone and began recording.
Then the f*neral director stepped forward.
“Richard told us the c0ffin had to remain sealed.
He brought it here himself and paid in cash.”
Richard’s face changed.
“Stay out of this.”
Ethan reached through the broken lid and tore the tape from Claire’s mouth.
“Call the police!” Claire gasped.
“And don’t let him destroy the blue envelope.”
“What envelope?” Ethan asked.
Richard suddenly aimed the g*n directly at him.
“She’s confused.”
“No, I’m not,” Claire cried.
“The papers inside prove why Richard needed everyone to believe I was g*ne.”
Before she could explain, a phone rang inside Richard’s jacket.
The screen lit up with one name: DR.
MERCER.
Claire stared at it in terror.
“He’s the man who signed my d*ath certificate.”
Then the locked doors behind the guests slowly opened, and a man’s voice said, “Claire was never supposed to wake up.”
