Chapter 8: The Truth Under Oath

Six months later, Claire sat beside Ethan in the front row of the county courthouse.
Richard entered in a dark suit, followed by Detective Harlan in prison clothing.
Richard looked at Ethan.
“You have grown.”
Ethan faced forward.
“I learned what standing straight feels like.”
The prosecutor called Dr.
Mercer first.
He took the witness stand and placed both hands on the rail.
“Who altered Claire Parker’s first medical record?” the prosecutor asked.
“I did.”
Claire’s fingers tightened around Ethan’s.
“Why?”
“Richard told me Claire’s father had shown signs of dementia before he passed.
Richard wanted the same diagnosis placed in Claire’s file so he could challenge anything she signed later.”
“Did you believe she had dementia?”
“No.”
“Did she authorize the trust transfer?”
“No.
She was sedated, and Richard guided her hand.”
Richard’s attorney rose.
“You are testifying to save yourself.”
Mercer looked toward Claire.
“I have already pleaded guilty to falsifying medical documents.
Nothing I say today removes that.”
The prosecutor held up the blue envelope.
“What did Claire place inside this?”
“An independent medical examination, the bank audit, and a letter revoking Richard’s authority.”
Richard leaned toward his attorney.
“That envelope was altered.”
Mara was called next.
She placed the original beside the judge.
“I found it under the c0ffin lining when Richard demanded a private inspection,” she said.
“Why did you hide it?”
“Because Detective Harlan ordered me to surrender everything directly to him.”
Harlan shook his head.
“She is lying.”
Mara turned toward him.
“You told me, ‘Living or not, Mrs.
Parker leaves in that box.’”
A murmur moved through the courtroom.
The prosecutor connected the memory card from Claire’s study to a monitor.
Richard appeared on the screen beside Harlan.
Harlan’s recorded voice filled the room.
“Once she is declared g*ne, the trust passes to you.
My share is twenty percent.”
Richard stood.
“That recording is fabricated.”
The judge struck the bench.
“Sit down.”
The prosecutor played a second clip.
Richard was shown pouring crushed tablets into Claire’s tea.
Ethan lowered his eyes.
Claire placed her hand over his.
“You do not have to watch,” she whispered.
“Yes, I do,” he said.
“I want him to see that I’m not looking away anymore.”
Richard’s attorney called Claire to the stand.
“Mrs.
Parker, did you remain married to Richard after discovering money missing from the trust?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell friends your husband handled financial matters because you found them overwhelming?”
“Yes.”
“Then is it possible you authorized transactions you later forgot?”
Claire looked directly at Richard.
“No.”
“You stayed with him for eleven years.”
“I stayed because every time I reached for the door, he threatened to take Ethan.”
Richard leaned back with a faint smile.
Claire pointed toward him.
“That smile is the reason I was afraid no one would believe me.”
Nora’s livestream appeared on the monitor next.
The jury watched Richard aim the g*n, threaten Ethan, and order everyone away from Claire’s c0ffin.
Richard’s attorney lowered his papers.
“No further questions.”
The jury returned after four hours.
Ethan held Claire’s hand as the clerk stood.
“On charges of kjdnapping, unlawful confinement, aggravated threat, fraud, and attempted theft of the Parker trust, we find Richard Parker guilty.”
Richard gripped the table.
“On charges of bribery, evidence tampering, and conspiracy, we find former Detective Alan Harlan guilty.”
Harlan sank into his chair.
Richard remained standing.
The judge sentenced Richard to twenty-two years in prison and ordered full restitution of every dollar taken from the trust.
Harlan received eight years and permanently lost his badge and pension.
Two officers approached Richard.
He turned toward Ethan.
“You will remember that I was the man who raised you.”
Ethan stood beside his mother.
“I’ll remember that my mother came back for me.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“Claire, none of this changes what you are.”
She removed her wedding ring and set it on the evidence table.
“It changes what I will never be again—your wife.”
The officers led him toward the side door.
Richard looked back once.
“You would have had nothing without me.”
Claire placed her arm around Ethan.
“We have each other.”
The door closed behind Richard with a solid click.
The prosecutor approached Claire but did not smile.
“There is one final hearing tomorrow,” she said.
