Chapter 2: The Message on the Screen

Naomi met Vanessa’s stare without flinching.
“Yes, I heard you.”
“Then remember it,” Vanessa snapped.
“Ethan belongs with someone from his own world.”
Naomi’s hands tightened around the folded linens, but her voice stayed calm.
“Ethan is not something you own.”
Vanessa’s smile vanished.
“You’ll regret saying that.”
Two weeks later, as Naomi released Vanessa’s heel in the silent ballroom, Ethan pushed through the stunned crowd.
“What did you do to her, Vanessa?”
“She att@cked me!” Vanessa cried.
“Call security—and search her room.
You’ll find my diamond earrings there.”
Naomi froze.
She had never entered Vanessa’s bedroom.
Then a young server stepped forward, trembling.
“That isn’t true.
I saw Miss Sterling near Naomi’s locker this morning.”
Vanessa turned pale.
“You saw nothing.”
A phone suddenly slipped from her evening bag and landed at Ethan’s feet.
Its screen lit up with a message:
“Are the earrings in place?
Make sure the maid takes the blame.”
Ethan slowly picked it up.
“Who sent this?”
Before Vanessa could answer, the ballroom doors opened.
Margaret Hale stood there, staring directly at Naomi.
“Ask Vanessa why she really brought Naomi into this house,” Margaret said.
