Chapter 7: The Door She Could Not Escape Through

Emergency lights glowed along the corridor as Naomi followed the sound of Vanessa’s heels toward the servants’ entrance.

Lucy stood near the exit, clutching the bank envelope that had just arrived by courier.

“Give me that,” Vanessa ordered.

Lucy stepped back.

“It belongs to my father.”

Vanessa seized her arm.

“You have no idea what your father was involved in.”

Naomi appeared at the end of the corridor.

“Let her go.”

“Stay back.”

“You framed me.

You forged Arthur’s signature.

Do not make Lucy pay for it.”

Vanessa pulled Lucy in front of her.

“Open the outer door, or everyone will learn that Daniel Mercer accepted money before Philadelphia.”

Lucy’s lips trembled.

“My father would never do that.”

“He took a payment from Margaret’s company.”

“It was an injury settlement,” Margaret called from behind Naomi.

“Conrad Sterling tried to turn it into a bribe eight years ago.”

Vanessa’s grip loosened.

Lucy twisted free and ran to Naomi.

“You lied about my father,” Lucy said.

Vanessa reached for the envelope, but Beatrice stepped between them.

“Enough.”

“Move, Mother.”

“No.”

“You will lose the house, the accounts, and every friend you have.”

Beatrice removed a document from her handbag.

“I froze the family trust twenty minutes ago.

You no longer control a dollar of it.”

Vanessa stared at her.

“You can’t do that.”

“As co-trustee, I can suspend payments when there is evidence of fraud.”

The study doors opened behind them.

Two financial investigators entered with a Boston police officer.

The first investigator held out his hand.

“Vanessa Sterling, give me your phone.”

“She stole it,” Vanessa said, pointing at Naomi.

“This woman has been manipulating Ethan for weeks.”

Ethan joined Naomi.

“I watched the message arrive.”

Arthur stood beside him.

“And I am filing a formal complaint over the forged transfer.”

Adrian emerged from the darkened study.

“Vanessa told me the signature had been authorized.”

She spun toward him.

“You arranged everything.”

“I sent one message,” Adrian said.

“You ordered the replicas, chose Naomi, and instructed me to erase the archive.”

“You weak little coward.”

Margaret placed her phone on speaker.

Conrad Sterling’s recorded voice filled the corridor.

“Once the maid is blamed, Ethan will agree to anything.

If he doesn’t, activate the transfer.”

Vanessa lunged for the phone.

Naomi moved once, turning her aside without bringing her to the floor.

“Don’t touch me!” Vanessa cried.

Naomi released her immediately.

“No one is holding you—except the truth.”

The investigator took Vanessa’s phone and read from the screen.

“We have messages concerning evidence tampering, a false theft report, and forged financial documents.”

Beatrice removed a diamond bracelet from her wrist and placed it in her daughter’s palm.

“This was your grandmother’s.

It is the last family possession I will give you.”

Vanessa let it fall to the carpet.

“You chose a stranger over your own daughter.”

“No,” Beatrice said.

“I chose the woman you should have been.”

The officer stepped forward.

Vanessa looked once at Ethan.

“You will regret choosing a maid when your family name means nothing.”

Ethan put his arm around Naomi.

“Her name means more to me than mine ever did.”

As Vanessa was escorted through the ballroom, the guests moved aside without speaking.

At the front doors, she turned toward Naomi.

“You think this house will ever let you forget where you came from?”

Naomi met her eyes.

“No.

But I finally remember that where I came from is nothing to be ashamed of.”

The doors closed behind Vanessa.

Ethan reached for Naomi’s hand, but she gently pulled it away.

“I love you,” she said.

“But I cannot stay here as your secret, your rescue, or your servant.”

May you like

She placed her staff keys in Arthur’s palm.

Then Naomi walked upstairs to pack.
