Chapter 1: The Boy Who Heard Everything
Victoria Hayes reached down in the middle of Rocco Caruso's engagement reception and yanked the hearing aid from three-year-old Noah's ear.
The little boy flinched against the edge of the reception table.
Victoria looked at the device in her hand.
Then she dropped it onto the marble floor.
Her heel came down hard.
The hearing aid cracked beneath her shoe.
"You heard something you weren't supposed to hear."
Noah stared at the broken pieces.
Then Rocco crossed the room.
He tore Victoria away from his son and pulled Noah safely against his side.
Noah was crying so hard he could barely get the words out.
"Dad…
She broke it after I heard everything."
Victoria's face changed.
Before Rocco could ask another question, she shoved Maria Collins aside and lunged toward Noah.
Rocco caught Victoria by both upper arms and pushed her back onto an empty reception sofa.
At the same moment, the bodyguards moved.
Victoria went pale.
And suddenly the strangest thing in the room wasn't the hearing aid she had destroyed.
It was the fact that Marcus was the man surrounded by guards.
