Chapter 2: The Statements She Already Knew About

Rocco crouched down in front of Noah and cupped the little boy's face in both hands.
"Tell me exactly what you heard.
Every word."
Noah's breath came in short, broken bursts.
He pointed across the room toward the hallway near the bar.
"She was talking to Marcus.
She said…
she said you weren't supposed to find out about the money until after the wedding."
The room went very quiet.
Rocco stood up slowly and turned toward Victoria.
"What money?"
Victoria lifted her chin.
"He's three years old, Rocco.
He misheard.
Children do."
"He reads lips," Rocco said.
"He's been doing it since he was eighteen months old.
Every word."
Victoria's composure cracked just slightly at the edges.
Maria Collins stepped forward from where she'd been pushed aside.
Her voice was low and steady.
"She's not the only one who knew.
I've been trying to tell you for six weeks.
There's an account, Rocco.
In Victoria's name.
The transfers started the same week she accepted your proposal."
Victoria spun toward Maria.
"You have no idea what you're talking about."
"I have the statements," Maria said quietly.
"All of them."
She reached into her clutch and placed a folded document on the table between them.
Victoria didn't move toward it.
That was the moment Rocco understood she already knew exactly what was inside.
