Chapter 2: The Message on Her Phone

For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she forced a laugh and glanced around at the watching guests.
“John is my manager,” she said.
“He recommended me for the promotion.
That’s all.”
“Then why are you trembling?”
“I’m not.”
Her phone suddenly lit up inside her open handbag.
She reached for it, but I was closer.
The screen showed one name: JOHN.
“Give me my phone!” she cried, grabbing my wrist.
The party fell silent.
I didn’t answer the call, but a message appeared beneath the name.
DID YOU MOVE THE MONEY BEFORE HE CHECKED THE ACCOUNT?
Her hand dropped from my wrist.
“What money?” I asked.
“You had no right to read that!”
“You accused me in front of everyone.
Now answer the question.”
Before she could speak, the elevator doors opened.
The woman I had been living with stepped into the penthouse, holding a thick envelope.
My accuser stared at her as if she had seen a ghost.
“You?” she whispered.
“You’re supposed to be overseas.”
The woman placed the envelope on the table and looked directly at me.
“John isn’t her manager,” she said.
“And that promotion is the smallest lie she’s told you.”
