Chapter 3: The Voice on the Recording

Daniel enlarged the image.

His mother, Judith, stood in the kitchen doorway with a folder pressed against her chest.

“My mother?” he whispered.

His daughter Lily nodded.

“Grandma comes when you’re working.”

Vanessa reached for the phone.

“Daniel, let me explain before you misunderstand.”

“Sit down.”

“I will not be ordered around in my own home.”

Daniel pulled the phone away from her and pressed play.

On the recording, Judith glanced toward the driveway before speaking.

“Give it another week,” she said.

“The weigh-in has to look convincing.”

Vanessa’s recorded voice came next.

“Noah cries every time I take the plate.”

“He’ll survive a few missed meals.

Once the report is filed, Daniel won’t be able to stop us.”

Daniel paused the video.

“What report?”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Your mother was worried about the children.”

“You took food from my son.”

“You’re never here,” she snapped.

“I handle everything while you pretend paying the bills makes you a father.”

Noah stepped behind Daniel’s leg.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Go upstairs with Lily.”

“Daddy, are we in trouble?” Noah asked.

“No.

You told me the truth.

Neither of you is in trouble.”

Lily took her brother’s hand, but she stopped at the stairs.

“Grandma made us stand on the scale,” she said.

“She took pictures when Noah was crying.”

Vanessa moved toward her.

“That is enough.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“You don’t tell her when it’s enough.”

The front door opened.

Judith walked in without knocking, carrying the same folder from the recording.

She froze when she saw the camera footage on Daniel’s phone.

“Vanessa,” she said, “you told me the system was off.”

Daniel placed the phone on the table.

“Why are you trying to make my children look neglected?”

Judith recovered quickly.

“Because they are neglected.”

“By the woman taking away their meals?”

“By the father who leaves before breakfast and comes home after dinner.”

“I work.

They have food, a home and a father who loves them.”

Judith set the folder down.

“Love doesn’t prove fitness.”

Vanessa moved beside her.

“Daniel, if you stay calm, this can still be handled privately.”

“What can?”

Judith opened the folder and slid a document across the table.

“Temporary guardianship,” she said.

“You sign tonight, and the children stay with me until you get yourself together.”

Daniel stared at the papers.

“You planned this.”

“We prepared for what was already happening.”

“What happens to Emma’s trust if you become their guardian?”

For the first time, Judith’s eyes shifted away.

Daniel’s late wife, Emma, had left money for Lily and Noah.

Daniel could approve payments for their needs, but he could never take the money for himself.

Judith tapped the signature line.

“That trust has nothing to do with this.”

“Then why does this document name you as replacement custodian?”

Vanessa’s phone lit up on the table.

A message appeared before she could turn it over.

DID HE SIGN?

THE HEARING IS AT NINE.

Daniel read it aloud.

“Who sent that?”

Judith closed the folder.

“It’s too late to argue.

The court has already been contacted.”

A knock sounded at the front door.

Judith looked directly at Daniel.

“If you refuse to sign, the children may not remain here tonight.”
