Chapter 6: The Sister Who Refused to Stay Silent

Claire placed her phone on the hood of Daniel’s car.

Messages filled the screen beneath Vanessa’s name.

“You sent these to yourself?” Daniel asked.

“Vanessa used our father’s old family account,” Claire said.

“She forgot I still had access.”

Ms.

Reed leaned closer.

“Scroll to the first message about the children.”

Claire tapped the screen.

Vanessa had written: Once Judith controls the trust, she pays my debts and I leave Daniel.

Judith’s reply sat beneath it: Only after the court declares him unfit.

Daniel swallowed.

“She never intended to stay.”

Claire shook her head.

“My sister has spent two years hiding loans.

Judith found out and offered her a way out.”

“Why are you helping me?”

“Because Vanessa tried something similar with our father.

She told everyone he was confused so she could control his accounts.”

Judith appeared on the porch.

“Claire, your sister warned me about you.”

“I’m sure she did.”

“You have no right to interfere.”

Claire lifted the phone.

“Would a judge agree?”

Judith reached for it, but Ms.

Reed stepped between them.

“Do not touch the evidence.”

“That phone contains stolen private messages.”

“It contains a plan to manipulate a custody proceeding.”

Vanessa rushed through the front door.

“Claire, give me the phone.”

“No.”

“I’ll pay what I owe you.”

“You told Dad I was stealing from him when I asked why his checks were disappearing.”

“That has nothing to do with Daniel.”

“It shows what you do when money is running out.”

Vanessa turned to Daniel.

“Claire hates me.

She’ll say anything.”

“Did you take Noah’s food?”

“I followed Judith’s instructions.”

Judith’s jaw tightened.

“Do not put this on me.”

“You promised the court would believe the photographs.”

“You volunteered to create them.”

Daniel looked from one woman to the other.

“Keep talking.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Give me the house and withdraw your challenge.

I’ll tell the court Judith pressured me.”

Judith laughed once.

“You would have nothing without me.”

Claire pressed the record button on her phone.

Vanessa saw it and lunged forward.

The phone slipped from Claire’s hand, but Daniel caught it.

“Now you’re trying to destroy evidence,” he said.

Vanessa grabbed Daniel’s sleeve.

“Listen to me.

Judith has the children.

If you humiliate us in court, she can make Lily and Noah say whatever she wants.”

Daniel removed her hand.

“Was that a threat?”

“It was a warning.”

Ms.

Reed held out her palm.

“Claire, send me copies of everything.”

Judith hurried into the house.

A moment later, smoke curled from the metal bin near the back door.

Daniel ran toward it.

Judith stood over the bin, dropping torn pages into the flame.

“What are you burning?” he demanded.

“Old financial records.”

He kicked the bin onto the wet grass.

Claire stamped out the scattered pages while Ms.

Reed photographed them.

One half-burned sheet carried Emma’s name and the seal of a law office.

Daniel lifted it carefully.

Judith’s face changed.

“That paper is meaningless.”

Claire read the remaining line aloud.

“‘Under no circumstance shall Judith Carter serve as custodian.’”

Daniel stared at his mother.

“Emma changed the trust.”

“She tried to,” Judith replied.

“Where is the complete document?”

“You’ll never find it before the hearing.”

A voice came from Claire’s phone.

Her recording had captured more than the argument.

An account notification had automatically downloaded an older audio file from Vanessa’s shared storage.

Judith’s voice filled the porch.

“Find the page Emma hid,” the recording said.

“Without her original letter, Daniel keeps control.”

Daniel looked at the half-burned sheet.

Then Lily appeared behind the glass door and silently pointed toward Emma’s blue music box.
