Chapter 2: The Message From Daniel’s Phone

“—that her son never wanted to see her again.”
A gasp moved through the ballroom.
Daniel’s face drained of color.
“I never said that.”
His father held up the page.
“The message came from your number.
It said, ‘If you come to the wedding, security will remove you.
Claire told me everything.
Stay away from us.’”
Daniel turned to Claire.
“You had my phone that night.”
“I was helping with the guest list,” Claire replied.
“Anyone could have sent it.”
His mother finally spoke.
“There was another message this afternoon.
It gave me a different entrance and said Daniel wanted to meet me privately.”
She glanced down at her ruined dress.
“No one was there.
The gate locked behind me, and I had to climb through the wet garden to reach the ballroom.”
“That proves nothing,” Claire snapped.
Daniel stared at her.
“How did you know about the gate?”
Claire froze.
Before she could answer, her phone lit up on the head table.
Daniel saw the message preview—and so did his father.
SHE GOT INSIDE.
DELETE EVERYTHING.
Daniel slowly picked up the phone.
“Claire,” he said, “who is Martin?”
Then a man near the back of the ballroom suddenly stood and rushed toward the exit.
