Chapter 7: The Recording Claire Forgot

Peter started toward the service corridor.
Daniel caught his arm.
“No.
She wants us chasing her instead of protecting the evidence.”
Naomi pointed at Owen.
“Can that exit be locked from outside?”
“It leads to the loading yard.
Security can close the vehicle gate.”
Owen used his radio.
“Close the south gate.
Do not touch Claire, but don’t let any vehicle leave.”
Martin handed Naomi the tablet.
“I’ll give you every recording.”
“You’ll also explain your part,” Daniel said.
Martin nodded.
“I locked Ruth outside.
I sent the messages from the second line.
Claire paid me, but that doesn’t excuse it.”
Ruth faced him.
“Why did you do it?”
“I owed money.
She offered enough to clear it.”
“You saw me at that gate.”
Martin’s eyes lowered.
“Yes.”
“You heard me calling for Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“And you walked away.”
Martin covered his face.
“Yes.”
The fire door opened.
Claire returned with two venue guards behind her.
“You cannot trap me here,” she said.
One guard held out the second phone.
“She tried to break this beneath a delivery truck.”
Claire looked at Gavin.
“Tell them to release me.”
Gavin remained beside the head table.
“My representation ends now.”
“I paid you.”
“You retained me based on false information.”
Claire’s laugh shook.
“Everyone suddenly has principles.”
Daniel stepped in front of her.
“Where did you plan to send the money?”
“You’ll never prove I planned anything.”
Martin tapped the tablet.
“The recording names the offshore account.”
“You altered it.”
“The file uploaded to the venue server when it was created,” Owen said.
“It has a timestamp.”
Claire turned toward Daniel.
“You’ll forgive your father for taking money but condemn me for trying to build a life with you?”
“My father admitted what he did.”
“Because I forced him.”
“And you have admitted nothing.”
“I loved you.”
Daniel looked at the message on her phone, then at Ruth’s muddy dress.
“You loved what I could sign.”
Claire’s lips tightened.
“Your mother poisoned you against me.”
Ruth stepped forward.
“No, Claire.
I made mistakes, and I will answer for them.
That is the difference between us.”
Two officers entered with the venue manager.
Naomi walked to meet them and handed over the drive, the tablet, and printed copies of the transfer.
Claire backed into a table.
“This is a family dispute.”
One officer looked at Daniel.
“Did you authorize the proxy or bank transfer?”
“No.”
“Did you give Claire permission to use your electronic signature?”
“No.”
Claire grabbed Daniel’s sleeve.
“If you say that formally, there is no coming back.”
Daniel removed her hand.
“There was no coming back when you left my mother outside that gate.”
The officer asked Claire to place her phones on the table.
She looked around the ballroom.
No one moved toward her.
“I gave Daniel everything he wanted,” she said.
“A beautiful wedding, important guests, a wife people admired.
Without me, he goes back to being his mother’s obedient little boy.”
Daniel picked up the wedding ring she had discarded.
“No.
I go back to being a man who listens when the people he loves are afraid.”
Claire held his gaze as the officers escorted her toward the doors.
“You’ll regret choosing them,” she called.
Daniel set the ring beside the unsigned place card.
“I regret not believing them sooner.”
After the doors closed, the officiant approached with a folder pressed to his chest.
“Daniel, I need to ask you something.”
Daniel wiped his eyes.
“What?”
“The marriage license has been signed, but I have not filed it.”
Naomi looked up sharply.
“Do not file anything.”
The officiant opened the folder.
“There’s another problem.
Claire replaced one page before the ceremony.”

He turned it around.
The space where Daniel’s legal name should have appeared was blank.
