Chapter 2: Three Words That Changed Everything

— PART 2 —

Daniel didn't hang up.

He stood completely still behind those hedges, phone pressed to his ear, watching Sophia laugh and whisper into the receiver like nothing in the world was wrong.

"I'll be home soon, baby," he said quietly.

"Get some rest."

"I will," Sophia cooed.

"I love you."

He ended the call.

His hand wasn't shaking.

That was the part that scared even him.

Maria touched his arm.

"Daniel…

there's something else you need to know."

He turned slowly.

"Tell me."

She swallowed hard.

"Those documents on the table — I've seen them before.

Last week, when you were in the shower." Her voice dropped to almost nothing.

"She had Marcus here then too.

He was pointing to the same papers.

I heard him say your company accounts were already being moved."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"How long?"

Maria looked down.

"Seven months.

Maybe more."

Inside, Sophia set her phone on the table and picked up a pen.

She held it over the signature line, glancing up at Marcus with that same cold smile.

"Should I sign tonight?" she asked him.

Marcus checked his watch.

"Daniel won't be back until tomorrow.

We have time."

Sophia clicked the pen open.

And that's when Daniel's phone buzzed again — this time, a message from a number he didn't recognize.

He looked down at the screen.

Three words.

*She's done this before.*
