Chapter 2: Someone Used to Come


She opened her mouth, ready with excuses.
"Sir, she was being difficult.
She refused to listen.
I had to be firm—"
"Firm?" His voice dropped low.
"She's four years old."
He looked down at his daughter's hands.
Red.
Raw.
Still trembling.
"How long has this been going on?"
The housekeeper said nothing.
That silence was its own answer.
His daughter tugged his sleeve.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
"Daddy…
she said you weren't coming back.
She said you didn't want me anymore."
The room went completely still.
He knelt down and looked her in the eyes.
"Who told you that, sweetheart?"
The little girl pointed.
He stood up slowly.
Something in his expression had shifted — past anger, past shock, into something colder.
"You told a four-year-old her father didn't want her."
The housekeeper stepped back.
"I was just trying to—"
"Get out."
"Sir, please, I need this job—"
"I said get out."
She grabbed her bag and moved toward the door.
But then his daughter spoke again — one quiet sentence that stopped everyone cold.
"Daddy…
she wasn't alone.
Someone used to come when you were away."
