Chapter 5: The Price of Lily

The bank manager carried Box 317 into a private room.
Mark sat beside Grace Bennett, his mother’s former attorney.
Ethan remained at the hospital while doctors tested the residue from the glass.
“Did my mother tell you about this box?” Mark asked.
“No,” Grace said.
“But she asked me one strange question before she passed.”
“What question?”
“She asked whether a marriage could survive the truth.”
Mark inserted the brass key.
Inside lay a black ledger, a flash drive, and a photograph of Vanessa standing beside Dr.
Cole outside a private bank.
Grace opened the ledger.
“These transfers total four hundred and eighty thousand dollars.”
“Vanessa said Ethan took two hundred thousand.”
“Then she expected you never to find the rest.”
Mark connected the flash drive to Grace’s laptop.
His mother appeared on the screen, seated at her kitchen table.
“Mark, if you are watching this, Ethan has returned.
I accused him because Vanessa showed me false statements.
When I discovered the real account, Dr.
Cole declared me incapable of managing my affairs.”
Mark covered his mouth.
His mother continued.
“Vanessa promised Ethan she would ruin your company if he defended me.
He left because he believed he was protecting you.
I was too ashamed to tell you I had believed her.”
The recording ended.
Mark’s phone rang.
Vanessa’s name appeared on the screen.
“Where is Lily?” he asked.
“With me.”
“You had no right to take her from Mrs.
Hale.”
“I arrived with an emergency custody order.
Ask the court officer who delivered it.”
Grace held out her hand for the phone.
Mark switched it to speaker.
“What do you want, Vanessa?” Grace asked.
“I’m speaking to my husband.”
“You’re speaking in front of his attorney.”
Vanessa laughed.
“Then explain this carefully.
Mark signs over his interest in the company and gives me the contents of Box 317.
In return, Lily comes home.”
Mark gripped the edge of the table.
“You are using our daughter as a bargaining tool.”
“I am protecting her from Ethan.”
“You locked him inside a wall.”
“And I have documents showing Mark approved irregular company payments.
If those documents reach investigators, he could lose everything.”
Grace glanced at the ledger.
“Documents can be examined.”
“Not before his clients abandon him.”
Mark leaned toward the phone.
“Let me speak to Lily.”
There was a pause.
“Daddy?” Lily whispered.
“Are you safe?”
“Mommy packed my clothes.”
Vanessa took back the phone.
“You have until six.”
The line went silent.
Grace turned another page in the ledger.
A sealed envelope slipped out.
“Mark, your mother created a trust.”
“For whom?”
“For Lily.
Your mother’s forty-percent share of the company belongs to your daughter, with Ethan and me as joint trustees.”
Mark stared at her.
“Vanessa doesn’t control the company even if I sign.”
“And she doesn’t know that yet.”
The door opened.
Vanessa stood there with a court officer behind her.
“Move away from the box,” she ordered.
The officer handed Mark a temporary order.
“Mrs.
Vanessa Carter has sole temporary custody until tomorrow’s hearing.”
Vanessa snatched the flash drive from the laptop and crushed it beneath her heel.
“There,” she said.
“Now your mother can stop talking.”
Grace calmly opened her handbag and removed an identical drive.
“That was the copy.”
Vanessa’s confidence vanished.
Mark’s phone lit up with a message from Lily’s tablet.
