Chapter 7: The Words Vanessa Could Not Take Back

Deputy Ruiz placed Dr.

Cole’s phone on the dining table.

Vanessa stood between two officers while Mark held Lily against his side.

Ethan entered with Grace and stopped when he saw the hidden room still open upstairs.

“Play it,” Mark said.

Dr.

Cole touched the screen.

Eleanor’s voice filled the room.

“Simon, Vanessa says Ethan stole from me.

You know that isn’t true.”

Then Vanessa answered from somewhere near the recorder.

“He signed what I put in front of him.”

“You threatened Mark’s company.”

“I protected my future.”

“You stole from your own family.”

“I took what Ethan would have wasted.”

The recording crackled.

Eleanor spoke again.

“And if he returns?”

Vanessa’s reply came clearly.

“Then I’ll make everyone believe he is unstable.”

Deputy Ruiz stopped the recording.

“That is enough for tonight.”

“No,” Mark said.

“Let it finish.”

Vanessa turned toward Dr.

Cole.

“I’ll double whatever the authorities offered you.”

“They offered me nothing.”

“I can pay for your lawyer.”

Grace placed the ledger on the table.

“With money belonging to Lily?”

Vanessa lunged for the phone.

Deputy Ruiz caught her wrist before she reached it.

“You’re making a mistake,” Vanessa said.

“Mark signed those company transfers.”

“I never signed them.”

“You won’t prove that before your business collapses.”

Grace removed a report from her folder.

“A handwriting examiner compared the transfers with Mark’s contracts.

The signatures were traced from the same page.”

Vanessa’s lips parted.

“You had no time to do that.”

“Your mother-in-law ordered the examination six years ago.”

Ethan stepped toward Mark.

“I wanted to show you.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because you called me after Vanessa showed you those false statements.”

Mark’s face tightened.

“What did I say?”

“You said, ‘If you ever cared about me, don’t come back.’”

Lily looked up at her father.

“Daddy?”

Mark faced Ethan.

“I said that before asking you one question.”

“You believed your wife.”

“I abandoned my brother.”

Ethan’s jaw trembled.

“You were supposed to know me.”

“I should have.”

Mark lowered his head, but Ethan pulled him into his arms.

“You opened the wall,” Ethan whispered.

“Start there.”

Lily wrapped both arms around them.

Ethan began to cry, and Mark held him tighter.

“I’m sorry,” Mark said.

“I will spend the rest of my life proving it.”

Vanessa watched them.

“How touching.

Ethan returns, and I become the monster.”

Lily turned.

“You hurt Uncle Ethan.

You hurt Grandma.

You told me to lie.”

“I am your mother.”

“A mother is supposed to make you feel safe.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You’ll regret choosing them.”

Deputy Ruiz stepped forward.

“Vanessa Carter, you are being taken into custody on suspicion of unlawful confinement, fraud, child endangerment, and tampering with evidence.”

Dr.

Cole lowered his hands.

“And me?”

“You will come with us for questioning.

Your cooperation will be documented, but it does not erase your part.”

Vanessa looked at Mark as the officer guided her toward the door.

“You will lose the house before you ever see that money again.”

“I would give up every brick to keep Lily safe.”

Vanessa stopped at the threshold.

“One day she will learn what you took from her.”

Lily held Mark’s hand.

“No,” she said.

“I’ll remember who gave Uncle Ethan bread.”

The officer led Vanessa outside.

Grace’s phone rang before the front door closed.

She listened, then looked at Mark.

“Vanessa filed one last document this morning.

The house was transferred to a private buyer.”

“I never approved a sale.”

“According to the deed, you did.”

Grace placed the document on the table.

Mark stared at the signature beneath his name.

The house—including the wall where Ethan had been hidden—was scheduled to change hands at nine the next morning.
