Chapter 1: The Last Dish

After a family dinner in their Atlanta home, everyone remained at the table chatting while a huge pile of dirty dishes filled the kitchen counter.
The front door swung open.
Aaliyah stepped in, utterly exhausted after a long shift at work.
Her mother-in-law, Denise, quickly stood up with a pleasant, artificial smile.
“Welcome home, dear.”
Aaliyah gave a tired smile back.
“Thank you.”
Denise gestured toward the kitchen sink.
“Would you mind taking care of those dishes for us?”
Aaliyah looked at the towering stack.
“I just got off work.”
Her husband, Marcus, quietly took a sip of his drink without looking up.
“It’s your job.”
Aaliyah turned to him, her voice lowering.
“My job?”
Denise smiled brightly at her.
“Of course.
I’m helping you learn how to be a proper wife and daughter-in-law.”
A low chuckle rippled through the room.
Aaliyah slowly moved over to the kitchen counter.
She stared at the mountain of grease and leftovers.
Then she looked back at her husband and his family, comfortably enjoying themselves at her expense.
A sudden, cold calmness settled over her face.
Without saying a word, she extended her arm—
and sl@mmed her hand across the counter, sweeping every single dish onto the floor.
CRASH!
Porcelain shattered violently against the hard tiles.
The room went completely silent.
Aaliyah wiped her hands together, gave a soft smile, and said:
“Done.”
She turned on her heel and headed for the front door.
Marcus jumped up, staring in utter shock.
“What on earth is wrong with you?”
Aaliyah paused and looked back.
“You wanted the dishes dealt with.”
Denise snapped, her sweet facade instantly crumbling.
“YOU UNGRATEFUL BRAT!”
Aaliyah kept her cool, level composure.
“Next time, clean up after yourselves.”
She opened the door and walked out.
Behind her, Denise’s furious screaming echoed into the night as the rest of the family sat frozen in total disbelief.
