Chapter 6: The Voice Behind the Signature

Evelyn played the final section of Leonard’s recording.

Carla’s frightened voice came through the speakers.

“Denise, I should never have stamped that form without Aaliyah here.”

Denise answered, “You owed me.

Besides, Marcus said his wife would agree.”

Carla whispered, “Then why did you copy her signature?”

The recording ended.

Nobody moved until Marcus stood and pointed at his mother.

“You told me Carla had watched Aaliyah sign an earlier copy.”

Denise laughed once.

“Don’t pretend you were innocent.”

“I agreed to the loan.

I did not agree to forge her signature.”

Aaliyah rose.

“You agreed to remove my name from my home.”

Marcus faced her.

“Mother said it was the only way to save her business.”

“Her business was already closed.”

Denise reached for the phone.

Evelyn pulled it away.

“Do not touch my property,” Evelyn said.

Denise’s voice dropped.

“Leonard can be persuaded.”

The office door opened before anyone answered.

Leonard stepped inside, carrying a flash drive.

“You’ve never persuaded me,” he said.

“You’ve only exhausted me.”

Denise stared at her brother.

“You would betray your own family?”

Leonard placed the drive in Evelyn’s hand.

“Aaliyah is family too.”

Marcus moved toward him.

“What else is on that?”

“Every doorbell recording from the last thirty days.”

Denise’s eyes narrowed.

“Delete them, Leonard.

I’ll repay the money you lent me years ago.”

“You told me that money was gone.”

“I can find it.”

Aaliyah folded her arms.

“With another loan against my house?”

Denise turned on her.

“You think you’ve won because you have one recording?”

“No,” Aaliyah said.

“I think I finally know who you are.”

“You broke my dishes and walked out of my son’s home.”

“My grandmother’s money bought that home.”

“Your grandmother is gone,” Denise said.

“She cannot protect you now.”

Leonard stepped between them.

“But I can testify.”

Denise’s expression flickered.

Evelyn inserted the drive into her computer.

“Leonard, were you present when Denise discussed the deed?”

“I was in the dining room.

She told Marcus the bank would approve the loan once Aaliyah was removed.”

Marcus shook his head.

“She said the money would reopen the store.”

Leonard looked at him.

“Did she tell you about the tax notice?”

“What tax notice?”

Denise moved toward the door.

Leonard blocked her path.

“The notice in your handbag last night.

You owe more than one hundred thousand dollars.”

Marcus stared at his mother.

“You said it was thirty thousand.”

“I was handling it.”

“With my wife’s savings?”

“With what this family had available.”

Aaliyah stepped closer.

“You didn’t need one loan.

You needed my entire home.”

Denise pointed at Marcus.

“He signed every transfer.”

Marcus’s face collapsed.

“Because you said you would repay it.”

“And you believed her instead of speaking to me,” Aaliyah said.

“I thought I could fix it before you noticed.”

Aaliyah removed her wedding ring and placed it beside the unsigned agreement.

“You didn’t hide a problem from me, Marcus.

You made me the solution without asking.”

He stared at the ring.

“Please don’t do this.”

“You did it.”

Evelyn’s assistant entered with a printed notice.

“The county has temporarily rejected the deed filing.

The bank also froze Denise’s business account.”

Denise rushed to the desk.

“They cannot freeze my account.”

“They can when ownership of the funds is disputed,” Evelyn said.

Denise grabbed the separation agreement and tore it down the middle.

Evelyn calmly gathered both pieces.

“Thank you.

That happened under two office cameras.”

Marcus whispered, “Mother, stop.”

Denise pointed at Aaliyah.

“If I lose everything, I will make sure you lose that house too.”

Aaliyah held her gaze.

“Say it louder.

The cameras may not have heard you.”

Evelyn’s phone rang.

She listened for several seconds, then looked at Aaliyah.

“Marcus filed an emergency petition this morning,” she said.

“He claims you are dangerous and is asking a judge to bar you from the house.”

May you like

Denise’s smile returned.

“And the hearing,” Evelyn added, “is tomorrow.”
